You stepped out. God nudged you in a direction, you obeyed, and then — the road got hard. And the moment it did, the doubt showed up: “God, did You really tell me to go this way? If this were right, would it be this difficult?”
I want to settle something for you today: difficulty is not proof you heard God wrong. God will not set you up to fail.
Does hardship mean I made the wrong decision?
No. Facing difficulty after stepping out in faith doesn’t mean you misheard God — it often means you’re right where He led you, in territory that requires trust. If God cleared you to walk a path, He’s already equipped you to navigate it. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you” (Isaiah 41:10). Obstacles on the road are not the same as being on the wrong road.
Don’t let resistance rewrite your confirmation
Here’s the trap: God gives you clear direction, you step out, and then the first wave of hardship makes you want to renegotiate the whole decision. But feelings of fear and difficulty are not new information about God’s will — they’re just the terrain. If He told you to go, the difficulty doesn’t cancel the instruction. It’s often the very place your faith was meant to grow.
When God tells you to step out, He does so knowing exactly what’s ahead. He doesn’t send His children into assignments He hasn’t already equipped them for. So when it gets scary, the answer isn’t to question the direction — it’s to lean harder into the One who gave it.
A coaching moment: separate the difficulty from the direction
Ask yourself two honest questions.
First: Did God actually confirm this direction? Think back to the clarity, the peace, the confirmation you had when you stepped out.
Second: Is my doubt coming from new evidence, or just from the fact that it’s hard right now? Nine times out of ten, it’s the difficulty talking — not a genuine sign you misheard.
Then preach the truth back to yourself: If God cleared me to navigate this, I’ve got it. Write it where you’ll see it on the hard days. A deck of Scripture reminders — like my Renewed Scripture Card Deck — makes that easier.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know the difference between God redirecting me and just facing hard obstacles?
Redirection usually comes with a settled sense of peace and clear conviction, not panic. Difficulty born of fear tends to feel like pressure to abandon what God already confirmed. When in doubt, return to the clarity you had when you first stepped out, and ask God to confirm it again.
What if I really did make the wrong choice?
God is gracious and able to redeem every step, even the missteps. If you moved in prayerful obedience, trust that — and keep your heart open for His correction. He’s more committed to your growth than you are to getting everything perfect.
