Why Don’t I See My Prayers Being Answered? (Your Prayers Are Working Behind the Scenes)
You’ve been praying. Faithfully, honestly, for a while now. And when you look around at your life, nothing seems to be moving. Same situation, same silence, same waiting. So the discouraging thought creeps in: Is God even hearing me? Am I praying wrong? Maybe this isn’t working.
I want to gently interrupt that thought, because I believe it’s one of the enemy’s favorite lies to whisper to a praying woman: that her prayers are landing on deaf ears. They’re not. Your prayers are putting things into motion, even when you can’t see a single sign of it yet.
Why don’t I see my prayers being answered right away?
You don’t always see prayers answered immediately because God is not a genie who grants wishes on demand. He’s a sovereign God working a process on His timeline. The moment you pray, He hears and begins to move, but that movement often happens behind the scenes first: in your heart, in the circumstances, in the timing, long before there’s visible evidence in your life. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition… present your requests to God” (Philippians 4:6). The absence of visible change is not the absence of God working.
We don’t serve a genie…we serve a sovereign God
Here’s a distinction that changes how you wait: a genie exists to grant your wishes on your timeline. God doesn’t. We were created for His purposes, and His answers come through His wisdom, not our demands. That’s not bad news, it’s the safest news there is. It means the God answering your prayers can see next week, next year, and ten years down the road, while you can only see today. He’s not ignoring you. He’s orchestrating something bigger than the moment you’re standing in.
Three things happening while you wait
Sometimes God is working on you first
When you pray for something, God may begin by working on your heart, preparing you to steward the very thing you’re asking for. And if what you’re praying for would actually cause you harm, or isn’t aligned with what He has for you, His love may reshape the desire itself. The delay isn’t rejection. It’s often preparation.
God is shifting the atmosphere before you see the evidence
We’re spiritual beings in a spiritual reality. Scripture tells us to pray without ceasing (Ephesians 6:18) precisely because prayer moves things in the heavenly realm before they show up on earth. When you pray, the atmosphere starts to shift.God is going before you, changing circumstances, moving people, preparing the environment. You may not see it at your feet yet. That doesn’t mean it isn’t already in motion.
Bible timelines are longer than they read
We read about someone praying in one chapter and receiving the answer a few chapters later and assume it was quick. But study the Scriptures closely and you’ll find that “a few chapters” was often ten, twenty, even more years of waiting. “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord” (Psalm 27:13-14). Things take time. That’s not a sign your prayer failed, it’s the nature of how God works.
A coaching moment: praise before you see it
Here’s where I want to shift something in you today.
First, name the lie. What has the enemy been whispering about your prayers: God’s not listening, you’re doing it wrong, it’s never going to happen? Write it down and hold it up against the truth: your prayers are working; God is working behind the scenes. (Keeping a few truth-filled verses where you’ll see them helps this stick and it’s exactly why I created my Renewed Scripture Card Deck.)
Then try this: instead of only asking, spend a moment praising and thanking God for what you can’t yet see, as though it’s already being handled, because it is. Praise Him for what you don’t see. Praise Him because you know He’s already working it out on your behalf. Praising in advance is one of the boldest expressions of faith there is.
And add one honest prayer: “God, prepare me for what I’m asking. Show me anything in me, or in what I’m praying for, that needs to change to align with You.” That prayer turns waiting into growth.
What becomes possible when you trust the process
Imagine praying without the anxious follow-up of scanning your life for proof. Imagine resting in the truth that the moment you spoke, God started moving and He hasn’t stopped. That’s the freedom of trusting a God who works even when it looks like He isn’t. You can keep praying, keep praising, and keep living in peace, because behind the scenes, things are being put into motion.

Yes. Scripture teaches that God hears His children when they pray and begins working immediately, often in ways that aren’t yet visible (Isaiah 65:24; Daniel 10:12). A lack of external change doesn’t mean your prayer went unheard.

Pair your asking with praise, thanking God in advance for what He’s doing and stay anchored in His Word. Discouragement often grows from focusing on visible evidence; faith grows from focusing on God’s character.
How do I know if I’m praying for the wrong thing?
Invite God into it: ask Him to reveal anything about your request that isn’t aligned with His will, and to reshape your desires if needed. A heart willing to be corrected is a heart being led.
