Don’t Just Set Goals… Become the Woman Who Reaches Them

Every season, you set the goals. You write them down, you mean them, and somewhere along the way they quietly slip. It’s easy to assume the problem is discipline or effort. But there’s a deeper reason goals so often don’t stick, and it changes everything about how you pursue them.

Don’t just set goals. Become the kind of woman who reaches them.

Why don’t I follow through on my goals?

Most goals don’t fail from a lack of willpower, they fail because we try to achieve them without becoming the person the goal requires. Behavior flows from identity. When you still see yourself as someone who can’t follow through, quits, or isn’t “that kind” of woman, your actions keep matching that self-image. Lasting change happens when you shift who you believe you are, and let your behavior rise to meet it.

Identity shapes behavior

Here’s the principle underneath it all: identity shapes behavior. You don’t rise to your goals; you fall to your identity. “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7). If the woman you believe yourself to be doesn’t reach that goal, no amount of hustle will hold, you’ll drift back to what feels true about you.

So the real work isn’t just building a better plan. It’s aligning your identity with who God says you are — capable, chosen, purposed — so that reaching the goal becomes the natural overflow of who you’re becoming, not a constant fight against who you think you are.

A coaching moment: become her first

Pick one goal that keeps slipping. Now ask a different question than usual.

Not “What do I need to do?” but “Who do I need to become to reach this, and what does she believe about herself?” Describe her: how she thinks, how she talks to herself, what she does on an ordinary Tuesday.

Then take one small action as her today. Not to prove anything, just to start closing the gap between who you’ve believed you are and who God says you already are. Becoming her isn’t pretending; it’s agreeing with God about your identity and letting your life catch up.

Frequently asked questions

Why does focusing on identity help me reach goals?

Because behavior follows identity. When you see yourself as the kind of person who follows through, your actions align with that self-image. Change the identity, and the behavior becomes sustainable instead of forced.

Isn’t “becoming her” just faking it?

No. For a Christian, it’s not pretending to be someone you’re not, it’s agreeing with who God already says you are (capable, chosen, purposed) and letting your daily choices catch up to that truth.
