You Obeyed God…Now What? Trusting Him When You Don’t See Results Yet
You did the hard thing. You made the decision you knew God was asking of you: you left the relationship, took the pay cut, pivoted careers, forgave the person, said the yes or the no that cost you something. You obeyed.
And then… nothing. No visible payoff. No sign you made the right call. Just the quiet, persistent wondering: Did I hear God wrong? Was this a mistake? So you lie awake running the timeline, questioning the decision, sometimes questioning God Himself.
If that’s the season you’re in, here’s the word I believe you need: it’s on Him now.
What should you do when you’ve obeyed God but nothing is happening?
When you’ve obeyed God and still don’t see results, your job shifts from producing the outcome to trusting the One who will. Obedience was your assignment. The outcome was never yours to manufacture, control, or rush. Your part is to obey and stay faithful; His part is to bring it to pass in His timing. “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8).
That single shift, from carrying the result to releasing it, is the difference between an anxious walk with God and a restful one.
The pressure was never meant to stay on you
This word came to me right after a one-on-one coaching session, when I sat down to pray and sensed God say something so simple it reframed everything: It’s on Me now.
You obeyed, it’s on Me now. You sacrificed, it’s on Me now. You surrendered, you stepped out on faith, you did the frightening, faithful thing, it’s on Me now.
So much of our exhaustion comes from attaching an expectation to our obedience: I did this, so now that has to happen, and it has to happen soon, and it has to happen my way. But surrender doesn’t come with a control panel. We don’t get to dictate the details or the timeline. When you truly submit something to God, you hand Him the outcome too and with it, the pressure of making it work. That was never your weight to carry.
Three things to hold onto while you wait
Your only assignment is obedience
If God led you to pivot, your job was to pivot. If He led you to let go, your job was to let go. That’s it. “What he needs is our obedience… and our faith that He’s going to see us through.” Everything past that first step: the how, the when, the outcome, all belongs to God. You are not responsible for making something out of nothing. That’s His specialty, not your burden.
Worry can’t accelerate what only God can do
Staying up worried about the timeframe changes nothing except your peace. It doesn’t move God’s hand; it only wears down your heart. You’ve already done the faithful thing. Now the faithful thing is to rest — to keep worshiping, keep getting in the Word, keep surrendering, and let God prove Himself faithful the way He has time and time again.
Be ready — even if He doesn’t need your hand in it
Here’s a nuance worth sitting with: God’s next move may or may not require your participation. Sometimes He simply asks for that one act of obedience and then works entirely on His own. So you don’t force additional steps that aren’t yours, but you do stay spiritually ready, close enough to hear Him if and when He speaks. Rest and readiness are not opposites.
A coaching moment: name what you’re still carrying
Slow down here for a second, because this is where it gets personal.
Finish this sentence honestly: “I obeyed God when I ________, and now I’m quietly anxious about ________.” Naming both halves matters, the obedience you can be proud of, and the outcome you’re white-knuckling.
Then ask yourself one question: What would change about today if I truly believed this part was on God, not on me? Would you sleep differently? Speak to yourself more kindly? Stop refreshing for evidence that you made the right choice?
You don’t have to fake peace you don’t feel. But you can practice handing the outcome back each time it creeps into your hands, and notice the belief underneath the worry, because that belief (that it all depends on you) is exactly what God is inviting you to release.
What becomes possible when it’s on Him
Picture lying down at night genuinely at peace, not because everything has resolved, but because you’ve done your part and entrusted the rest to a God who has never once failed you. That’s the freedom on the other side of surrender. You obeyed. You can exhale now.

I’m Charae Tucker, a certified Christian life coach and the founder of Thrive From Within. I help Christian women renew their minds, heal, and walk boldly in the purpose God has for them, including the delicate space between obeying God and seeing the fruit.
If you’re in that in-between right now: faithful but weary, obedient but unsure, you don’t have to navigate it alone. Power Into Purpose is a focused, faith-rooted starting point to quiet the second-guessing and root your confidence in God rather than the outcome.
Reading about trusting God is a start. Learning to actually rest in Him, with support, is where it sticks. That’s what coaching is for.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I actually heard God or made a mistake?
A lack of immediate results is not proof you misheard God. Scripture consistently shows obedience followed by seasons of waiting. If the decision aligned with God’s character and His Word and you moved in prayerful obedience, trust that and let the timeline be His.
Why does God make us wait after we obey?
Waiting isn’t punishment; it’s often where trust is built. It shifts our dependence off of outcomes and onto God Himself, and it grows the kind of faith that isn’t shaken by circumstances or timing.
How do I stop worrying about the outcome?
Return the outcome to God each time you notice yourself picking it back up, through prayer, worship, and staying in His Word. Peace grows as you practice releasing, not as circumstances change.
Does trusting God mean I do nothing?
No. It means you do the one thing He’s asked and stay ready for anything more He may lead you to, without striving to control results that were never yours to control.
